One of the most common questions I get from clients after they book a session is, “Where should we do the photos?” It’s a great question—and one that I absolutely love answering! Rockingham, NC, and its surrounding areas are packed with stunning locations that offer the perfect backdrop for any kind of photoshoot, whether you’re celebrating a special moment or just capturing the beauty of everyday life. From scenic nature spots to charming local landmarks, there’s no shortage of places that will make your photos pop.

In this post, I’m sharing some of my favorite places to shoot in and around Rockingham. Whether you’re looking for rustic charm, vibrant greenery, or an urban feel, I’ve got you covered with a mix of spots that will make your session truly unforgettable. So, grab your camera (or, you know, book me for your session!) and let’s dive into the top photo spots in the area.

The Leake House

The Leake House, a charming historic gem in downtown Rockingham, NC, is a fantastic spot for photos. With its beautiful settings, there are plenty of great photo ops here. The front of the house features a spacious porch with a brick walkway leading up to it, lined by large trees that provide lovely shade. The front yard creates a perfect backdrop for family portraits, with the house standing proudly in the background. Around back, you'll find a large grassy area that's ideal for capturing fun, playful moments—especially if you’ve got little ones who want to run and explore. There's also a garden area on the side, complete with brick paths and a gazebo, adding a touch of rustic charm. Whether you're looking for a safe, spacious place for the kids to play or a cozy, scenic location for a more relaxed shoot, the Leake House offers a beautiful setting for any session.

Hitchcock Creek

Hitchcock Creek in Rockingham is an ideal location for capturing large family or generational photos, thanks to its spacious open field. The park also features a playground, making it a great spot for kids to take a break during the session or as a fun reward afterward. For those looking to explore more scenic options, there’s a nearby creek and walking trail, though these areas may have limited sunlight during certain seasons due to tree cover and cloud cover. Hitchcock Creek is also pet-friendly, making it a fantastic choice for sessions that include furry family members.

Sycamore Lane

Sycamore Lane in Ellerbe is a hidden gem, lined with stunning trees that create a perfect backdrop for photos year-round. Whether you’re capturing vibrant summer shots or the rich colors of fall, the natural beauty here is sure to impress. A small grassy area along the roadside also offers a perfect spot for family portraits. I highly recommend bringing a coordinating quilt or blanket for seated poses, as it adds a charming touch to your photos. The only consideration is that Sycamore Lane is a public road, so extra caution is needed, especially with young children during your shoot.

Private Farms

Richmond County is home to several privately owned farms and fields that offer stunning natural backdrops for photos year-round. If you’re after wide open spaces and a rustic, countryside feel, these locations are ideal. Keep in mind that we’ll need to secure permission before your session, as these are private properties. Additionally, some of these farms may have animals on site, so it’s important to be mindful of that when planning your shoot.

Hamlet Depot

The Hamlet Depot is a charming location, offering picturesque sidewalks and beautiful trees as a natural backdrop for your photos. A covered shelter with picnic tables provides a convenient spot to rest and prep, especially when working with kids. The property also features a historic train that children can explore and even walk through, adding a fun element to the session. Since the Depot is sometimes used for community events, we’ll need to check availability before scheduling your shoot.
